Marine Education
While currently on hold, the curriculum and community demand remain high. We are actively seeking an education program sponsor or dedicated lead educator to reactivate these classrooms.
Fostering a lifelong connection to Long Island’s ecosystems.
A Strong Legacy
Training the next generation of coastal stewards
For years, our flagship youth programs have brought coastal science to life. In cooperation with the Town of Brookhaven, we have welcomed humdreds of students to the Marine Environmental Stewardship Center for immersive, standard-aligned field trips.
From wading into Mount Sinai Harbor with seine nets to exploring marine biology through interactive touch-screen exhibits, we have provided students with their very first look into the vibrant underwater world right in their backyard. Our youth programs are designed to inspire the next generation of environmental caretakers.
Extending educational beyond the classroom
True environmental stewardship involves the entire community, and we have spent years pairing hands-on habitat restoration with critical local advocacy. Our community network has served as a bridge between scientific data and public action.
Before our volunteer beach cleanups, we provided tailored talks detailing the immediate threats that household litter and stormwater runoff pose to our marine wildlife. Simultaneously, our Shellfish Restoration Program has brought the public face-to-face with the vital, water-filtering role that oysters and clams play in keeping our waters healthy and clear.
Lesson Plans
While we work to reactivate our programs, our educational resources remain completely free and open to educators. Access over 100 lesson plans that CSLI has created and gathered spanning critical marine issues:
