Beach Cleanups
This program is currently paused. If your corporation, school, or community group wants to fund or fully spearhead the return of our cleanup schedules, we have the blueprint ready.

Beach Cleanup Program
In 1989, we started directing and organizing beach cleanups around Long Island when CSLI’s founder Dave Johnson became a Site Captain for Annual Coastal Cleanup Day. In 2005 we formally became a non-profit organization and began working with towns such as the Village of Port Jefferson, Village of Belle Terre, and Town of Brookhaven, to attain permits and create regular beach cleanup schedules year-round. By 2026, we have cleaned hundreds of miles of beach and removed over 200 tons of trash from our shores, preserving the beauty of Long Island’s beaches and the safety of our local marine life.
Volunteers came out to clean the beach and help keep Long Island’s beaches clean and safe for generations to come. Many also assisted at the table and tent helping to sign people in, provide materials and information to participants, and separate recyclables from non-recyclables.
At our cleanups, we provided bags, gloves, snacks, and water for our volunteers. Our organization has a truck we used to pick up large items off the beach and haul them away, and a boat to pick up floating debris. We also documented the type of trash we collected during each cleanup according to categories, compiling our data at the end of each year.
How to get involved.
The Sponsor-A-Beach Program is based on monetary donations from individuals, businesses, organizations, or government agencies. The sponsor picks a beach and CSLI organizes everything from recruiting and training volunteers, to getting permits and directing the cleanup.
